Seamless Gutters in Houston: What $9 to $15 a Foot Buys You

Three quotes for seamless gutters on the same house in Houston can come back at $1,400, $1,900 and $2,600. Same length, same color, all "seamless aluminum." The difference is in five things that don't show up on a one-line quote. None of them is visible from the street on install day, and all of them decide what the gutter looks like in year eight.

The five things that move the price

1. The gauge of the metal

Aluminum gutter coil comes in .027 and .032 thickness. The .027 is what most production crews run because the coil is cheaper and it's easier to form. It also dents when a ladder leans on it and sags under a load of wet oak leaves. The .032 costs about 10% more in material and is what we run as standard. Ask which gauge is on the quote. If the answer is "standard," it's .027.

2. How it's hung

Spike-and-ferrule hangers — a long nail driven through the front of the gutter — are fast, cheap and back out of the fascia within a decade in Houston's heat-and-humidity cycle. Hidden hangers are a bracket inside the gutter, screwed into the fascia, and they don't move. Spacing matters too: every 24 inches on normal runs, 18 inches on runs that carry a lot of roof. A quote that says "hangers" with no type or spacing is spikes at 36 inches.

3. Downspout size

A 2x3 downspout is the default in the coil truck. A 3x4 costs about $40 more per downspout installed and carries nearly twice the water. In Houston that's the difference between a gutter that works in a storm and one that overflows. We put 3x4 on every job unless there's a reason not to. 4. Corners and end caps

Corners are the only seams on a seamless system, and they're where leaks start. There are two ways to do them: a factory-made box miter (a corner piece the runs are sealed into) or a hand-cut strip miter. Both work when they're done well and sealed with a polyurethane sealant that stays flexible. Cheap corners use silicone, which lets go in five years of Houston sun. A hip roof in Cinco Ranch with ten corners has ten chances to get this wrong.

5. What's under the gutter

Rotted fascia is common on Houston homes over 20 years old, and a new gutter hung on rotten wood is a wasted new gutter. A careful crew checks the fascia on the estimate visit and prices any replacement as a separate line, so you see it before the job — not as a surprise add-on halfway through.

For a single-story home with 160 feet of gutter and four downspouts, 5-inch .032 aluminum with hidden hangers and 3x4 downspouts is $1,650 to $2,200 in the Houston area. Six-inch on the same house is $2,000 to $2,600. The full breakdown is on the pricing page.

The $1,400 quote is usually .027 metal, spike hangers, 2x3 downspouts and silicone corners — which is to say, exactly the gutters you're replacing, installed again. It'll look the same on day one. It won't in year eight.

Where the $2,600 quote comes from

Sometimes the high quote is a company with a big marketing budget and a sales rep on commission. Sometimes it's a legitimately different job: 6-inch gutters, a lot of corners, two stories, fascia work folded in. Ask for the line items and you'll know which. A gutter estimate in Houston that can't be broken into lines isn't an estimate; it's a number someone thinks you'll pay.

How to compare quotes

Ask each contractor for: gauge, hanger type and spacing, downspout size, corner method, whether fascia was checked, and whether tear-off and haul-away are included.
